I’m not always very good at slowing down. I like having things to do, things to work on, something moving in the background. Even when I tell myself I’m going to take it easy, I usually end up finding something to fill the time with anyway, because apparently sitting still is a skill I am still developing.
But every once in a while, something comes up that feels worth making space for, and this week is one of those times. We’re celebrating Sam’s birthday a little early, and instead of trying to fit it in between everything else, I decided to actually step back for a few days and let it be the focus. No squeezing it in, no multitasking it into the schedule, just taking the time to be present for it.
I don’t do that very often, but I’m realizing I probably should. There’s something about choosing to pause instead of being forced to that feels different. It feels more intentional, like you’re actually deciding what matters instead of just reacting to whatever comes next. And I think that’s been on my mind a lot lately, especially with how easy it is to keep everything moving.
I know I’ll come back to the kitchen in a few days and pick everything back up again. The dough will still rise, the oven will still be there, and the rhythm will come back pretty quickly. But for now, it feels right to step away for a little bit, celebrate someone I love, rest a little, and enjoy something without trying to turn it into another task.
And honestly, that feels like a good thing.
