I’ve always loved celebrating people, and I don’t really think I fall cleanly into one category with it. I love the small, intentional things that make someone feel seen, but I also love going a little over the top when I can. There’s something really fun about putting extra thought into a moment and letting it feel bigger than it technically needs to be.
A lot of that probably comes from how I’m wired. Gift giving has always been one of my love languages, and hosting is right up there with it. I like thinking through what someone would enjoy, what would make them feel special, and how to create a space where they can just be present and enjoy it. Sometimes that looks simple, and sometimes it looks like doing the most for no real reason other than “I wanted to.”
Birthdays, especially, have always felt important to me. It’s not really about the party itself as much as it is about the pause. It’s the chance to stop and say, “Hey, I’m really glad you’re here,” and to do that in a way that actually feels tangible. Whether that’s a full setup with decorations and food or a hand-made card and something warm to share, I think both matter.
With everything going on lately, I’ve been thinking about that a little more. Getting to host my sister and her husband, celebrating my brother’s ordination, and looking ahead to celebrating Sam’s birthday in June has been a good reminder of how much I value those moments. They don’t have to be perfect, but I do think they’re worth putting effort into.
I think that’s part of why I love baking the way I do. It fits into both sides of that. It can be something simple that just shows up on the table and makes the moment better, or it can be part of something a little more thought-out and celebratory. Either way, it ends up in the same place - shared with people, part of something that matters.
And I think that’s what I keep coming back to.
Not choosing between small or over the top, but letting it be both.
