Father’s Day always makes me think about how different dads can be, and how somehow they still show up in really similar ways. My dad is the kind of person who is always moving. He’s into triathlons, The Beatles, alt rock music, and supporting his kids in whatever they want to do - especially if it’s sporty. You can also usually find him on Facebook sharing sunrise or sunset pictures, or posting a reel with a bad dad joke that he absolutely thinks is funny.
My father-in-law is different in a lot of ways, but somehow very similar where it matters. He’s also deeply supportive of his kids and the people he loves. He’s into yard maintenance, donuts, LinkedIn, and learning anything and everything from YouTube. To him, almost anything is figureoutable if you can find the right video and give it enough time. You can find him scrolling LinkedIn, sharing YouTube videos, or asking what pair of shoes you may want next.
They’re different people with very different rhythms, but they both show up consistently. That’s what I think I appreciate most. It’s not always some big dramatic thing - it’s the steady support, the encouragement, the interest in what everyone is doing, and the very specific ways they make themselves part of your life.
I’ve been thinking about that a lot with Father’s Day coming up. How much it matters to have people who show up for you, who cheer you on, who ask questions, who send you links, who make bad jokes, who care about the things you care about because they care about you. It’s funny and sweet and sometimes a little ridiculous, but it means a lot.
And maybe this is where I always end up bringing it back to food, but I do think there’s something about baking that fits into that kind of love. It’s not always flashy. Sometimes it’s just something made with care, put on the table, and shared with people you’re thankful for.
So here’s to the dads who show up in all their very specific ways. The runners, the fixers, the music sharers, the donut appreciators, the bad-joke posters, the YouTube learners, the shoe gifters, and the people who make support feel steady and real.
