Mother’s Day always makes me think about how different moms can be, and how they each show up in their own way.
My mom is someone who loves being part of the world I get to work in. She’s always excited about the theme parks, about visiting, and about sharing with other people what rides I’ve gotten to be a part of. She’s also a teacher, and from what I’ve seen and heard, she’s always singing to her students, sometimes for laughs, sometimes to get their attention, and sometimes just because. There’s something really special about that kind of energy, and about someone who brings that much personality into what they do.
My mother-in-law shows up in her own way too. She loves hosting, crafting, and putting together celebrations, but she’s also just as quick to share what her kids are involved in. She’s always paying attention, always interested, and always ready to talk about it. She’s also an actress, which feels very fitting, because she brings that same creativity and presence into everything she does.
They’re different, but they both bring something meaningful into the lives around them.
I think that’s what stands out to me most when I think about Mother’s Day. Not that there’s one way to be a mom, but that there are so many different ways to show care, creativity, and presence in the lives of other people.
Some people celebrate in big ways, some in quieter ones, and most fall somewhere in between, and I think that matters.
It’s not always about the perfect moment or the perfect relationship. Sometimes it’s just about recognizing the ways people show up, even when those ways look different than expected.
And like most things for me, it eventually comes back to the table. To food, to gathering, to sharing something with the people around you. Whether it’s a full celebration or just something small, there’s something meaningful about marking the moment in a tangible way.
So here’s to the moms, the mother figures, and the people who show up with care in all the ways they know how.
