There’s a very specific moment every summer when it feels like things start to shift. Growing up, that moment always came earlier than it needed to. Target would start putting out back-to-school displays sometime in July, and I remember being irrationally annoyed about it every single year. Where I grew up, we didn’t go back to school until after Labor Day, so it felt like they were trying to rush something that wasn’t even close to happening yet.
It felt like summer was getting cut short before it was actually over, and even if nothing in my life had changed yet, just seeing it was enough to make it feel like something was ending. Like there was a countdown I hadn’t agreed to.
I think that feeling stuck, because even now there’s still a point in August where everything starts to feel a little different. Not in a big, obvious way, just small things. People are a little more scheduled, a little more aware of what’s coming next, and things start to fall into place a bit more than they did earlier in the summer.
It’s not really about school anymore, but the shift still happens, and I notice it in my own routine too. Things feel a little more structured, a little more intentional, and a little less like I’m just moving through the day without thinking about it. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just different from the beginning of summer.
And honestly, I don’t mind it as much as I used to. There’s something nice about things settling into place again, even if it means letting go of a little bit of that unstructured, wide-open feeling that comes with the start of the season.
It’s not the end of summer, it just feels like the part where everything starts again.
