The Fourth of July always feels like one of those days where the plan is simple, even if the details aren’t. There’s usually some version of being outside, being around people, and eating at some point in between everything else. Sometimes it’s more organized, sometimes it’s just whoever shows up and whatever ends up on the table, but either way it tends to work itself out.
I’ve noticed that the food that actually gets eaten on days like this is never the complicated stuff. It’s the things people don’t have to think about, the things you can grab, come back to, or eat while you’re halfway paying attention to a conversation or something happening across the yard. Most of the time, it’s something simple that doesn’t need explaining or perfect timing, and still somehow disappears by the end of the day.
I think that’s what I’ve come to appreciate about it. Not every moment needs something big or planned out to feel complete. Sometimes it’s just about having something there that works, something that fits into the day instead of trying to shape it, something that makes everything feel a little easier without needing to be the focus.
That’s usually where I land with what I bring, or what I make ahead of time, or what I make sure is there when everything winds down later. Something simple, something shareable, and something you don’t have to think too hard about once you set it down.
