What I End Up Bringing 🍞

I’m not usually the person who shows up empty-handed, and honestly, I don’t think I was ever really given the option.

I’m Italian, Irish, and German, and especially growing up with an Italian grandmother, showing up without something in your hands just wasn’t how things were done. There was always something to bring, something to share, something that made you part of what was happening before you even walked in the door.

That habit stuck.

My dad had his own version of it too. He would bring an Entenmann’s bakery treat to the office for his team on Fridays, like clockwork. It wasn’t anything complicated, but it was consistent. It was something people could count on, and something that made the end of the week feel a little more like something to look forward to.

So now, even if no one asks me to bring anything, I still do.

With Father’s Day coming up, I’ve been thinking about that a little more. Not so much in a “what should I bring to a full gathering” kind of way, because most of the time we’re going out to celebrate, but more in the small ways that habit still shows up.

Sometimes it’s bringing something to someone beforehand, sometimes it’s having something ready for later, and sometimes it’s just knowing that food is still part of how the day feels, even if you didn’t cook it yourself. It’s less about the setup and more about the instinct.

I think that’s what I’ve come to appreciate. Not every moment has to revolve around food, but it still finds its way in somehow. Something to share later, something to bring home, something that makes the day feel a little more complete without needing to be the main event.

And if I’m being honest, I also like bringing something that I know I’ll want to eat later. That’s part of the strategy.

So if you’re heading into a weekend with plans, or even just a casual get-together, that’s probably where I’d start. Something simple, something shareable, and something you don’t have to think too hard about once you set it down.

Because most of the time, that’s what actually gets enjoyed.
