aka: How Rest, Boundaries, and Saying “No” Make My Bread Better
If you’ve ever looked at Bread by Blaze and thought, “Wow, she must be doing everything,” I’m here to lovingly and crustily tell you:
I’m not. And I don’t want to.
I have a full-time job. I have a wonderful husband. I have a life group on Tuesdays, choir on Wednesdays, D&D whenever we can fit it, and I try to rest every Saturday or Sunday. I also have a cat named Sabre who supervises everything, including my rest. My calendar is full - not in a braggy, hustle-culture way, but in a very real, very human way.
For a long time, I thought I had to keep saying yes to every request.
“Can you bake for this event?”
“Can you squeeze in one more order this week?”
“Can you start shipping yet?”
I love baking, I love people, and I really love being part of someone’s meal or celebration. But I’ve learned (the hard way, a few times) that doing everything doesn’t mean doing it well. Especially not with joy.
Learning to Say “No” (With Love)
At some point, I had to ask myself:
If I give away every ounce of energy, what’s left for the people I care about most? For the calling God gave me? For myself?
The answer: not much.
So I started saying no - gently, intentionally, prayerfully - and setting boundaries I never used to think I needed. Decreasing my delivery radius. No adding more than I can reasonably bake with two hands and a cat underfoot.
And you know what? Bread by Blaze got better.
Because I wasn’t exhausted. I wasn’t running on fumes. I was baking out of abundance, not burnout.
Choosing Margin = Choosing Meaning
I make bread after work. I wait to bake until orders come in. I restock the site once a week. I plan around my real life, not in spite of it. And when I take a day of rest? I actually step away from the oven.
Choosing margin has made this little bakery feel more like what it was always meant to be:
a joy, a ministry, and a way to serve others with love (and carbs).
I’m not trying to build an empire. I’m trying to build something sustainable, spirit-led, and kind - not just to others, but to myself too.
If You’ve Ever Wondered…
Why I don’t say yes to last-minute orders: I need margin.
Why I close the site sometimes: I need a day of rest.
Why I haven’t started confirming deliveries: I’d like to sleep this weekend.
Why it’s still just me (and Sabre): That’s the way it needs to be right now.
Final Thoughts (On Bread and Boundaries)
I’m learning that faithfulness doesn’t always look like doing more. Sometimes it looks like being still. Sometimes it looks like baking five orders instead of 15. Sometimes it looks like saying no to the thing that would stretch me too thin - even if I’d love to say yes.
And if you’re someone who’s supported Bread by Blaze through those boundaries - thank you. You’re not just supporting a bakery. You’re supporting a real person, trying to live a life full of meaning, margin, and a little bit of flour on everything.
Stay crusty,
- Blaze
